What to Buy

Televisions, stores and advertisements make students believe they need more back to school supplies than they really do. In all reality, you need very few supplies to succeed at a university or college. Start off with a notebook and folder for each class and plenty of pens, pencils and highlighters. After your first week of classes, you should have a general idea of any other supplies you need. For example, for a research heavy class, buy a set of note cards.

By your third week, you need a flash drive. A flash drive works as not only a back-up data holder, but it's portable. You can tote around the flash drive anywhere. A flash drive is compatible with all operating systems. This is much easier than dragging around a laptop. You should buy a flash drive with at least 5 gigabytes of space. Clean out the hard drive every semester. Not only can you use it to hold information on the go, but you can also store extra files on it. As many college instructions will tell you, it's important to have a back-up for all information. Technology fails all the time. By keeping a file on both your computer and flash drive, you add extra security to your projects.

The other school supply you need is something to carry all your stuff in. It can be a backpack, shoulder bag or tote bag. Choose a bag that has a strong strap. The last you want to do is clean up a mess after your bag breaks. When choosing a bag, think about how much walking you will do. For example, if you are walking all over campus, a backpack offers more support.
